About this work
Two facing rows of men, wearing chapans, turbans and embroidered skullcaps, sit cross-legged on ornate patterned carpets that stretch across the floor. Between them runs a long white cloth set with glasses of tea, plates of pomegranates and dried fruit, and small teapots, while some figures speak or gesture toward one another.
Warm earth tones of brown, ochre and rust dominate the robes and carpets, punctuated by the bright red of fruit and the pale cloth running down the center. Paint is applied with controlled, descriptive realism, rendering faces, beards and fabric textures individually, and the low, even light gives the gathering a calm, dignified stillness.
