About this work
Two women wrapped in dark hooded mantles stand together within a shadowed stone niche. The one facing forward has a pale, careworn face and lifts both hands before her; the second, hood fallen back to reveal dark hair, tilts her head and leans into the embrace with eyes turned upward, their hands meeting at the center.
Deep blacks dominate the heavy drapery, set against the warm ochre stone behind and lit sharply on the faces and clasped hands. Loose, expressive brushwork models the folds of cloth, and the strong chiaroscuro and close embrace give the scene a hushed, sorrowful intimacy.
