About this work
Dark wet mud strewn with grey stones and shallow puddles fills the foreground, giving way to a calm river band that mirrors the sky. Along the low far bank a line of trees, a few small houses and sheds sit beneath an enormous, rolling mass of clouds that occupies most of the canvas.
Cool blue-greys and off-white dominate the sky, set against dark umber-brown earth in the foreground. Broad, textured brushstrokes model the piling clouds, while soft diffused light suggests early morning. The naturalistic handling gives the damp landscape a calm, still, unhurried feeling.
