About this work
A dark-haired woman with a jagged crown-like headpiece leans forward, chin resting on folded arms sleeved in a shimmering pattern of green, teal and violet flecks suggesting malachite stone. Her pale, still face looks out with a heavy, unreadable expression, while loose dark hair and a trailing patterned garment merge into the swirling background.
Set against a deep teal ground worked with looping, scratched lines and ribbon curls, the palette stays cool, greens and blues broken by small flecks of pink and yellow in the sleeves. Chalky white highlights model the face, and the textured, mineral-like surface evokes veined stone, giving the figure a still, enigmatic presence.
