About this work
A woman with closed eyes and both hands raised to her temples wears a scaled, patterned hood that continues down into the coiled body of a snake winding across her chest and shoulders. Torn, roughly textured panels in cream and ochre flank her like open drapery or wings, set against a near-black maroon ground flecked with small patches of magenta.
Thick impasto and collage-like textures build the golden fragments, contrasting with the smoothly painted, pale face and the dark, reptilian patterning of the serpent. The palette stays close to black, bone and gold, broken by small hits of pink and red, giving the portrait a hushed, symbolic, faintly unsettling quality.
