About this work
A shallow niche holds a wooden frame opening onto a miniature painted scene — a coastal town with ships and, faintly, robed figures beside an inscription reading 'Hans Memling.' Below it on a draped table sit a closed leather-bound book, a loose illuminated manuscript page, a tall metal chalice, and a pomegranate split open to spill its red seeds, with a small carved relief propped at the top edge.
Warm browns and golds dominate, with the cool blue sky of the inset scene and the ruby pomegranate seeds providing the only saturated color notes. Paint is handled smoothly on the objects, with heavier impasto on the gilded frame catching the light. The arrangement of book, chalice, and fruit around a borrowed old-master image gives the still life a hushed, scholarly, quietly devotional air.
