About this work
A single figure stands in three-quarter turn, silhouetted in flat plum against a smoldering red-and-ochre ground. A structured, sharp-shouldered jacket and a wide-brimmed cap suggest a bullfighter's dress; one arm bends at the hip, the other trails a gloved hand. Body and costume dissolve at the edges into ragged patches of red.
Color is reduced to blood red, ochre and near-black, applied as flat, torn-edged fields rather than modeled volume, with heavy black contour lines standing in for detail. The handling is graphic and feverish, more blaze than description, giving the figure a smoldering, combustible intensity.
