About this work
A red-veiled Virgin holds the swaddled Christ child at the center of a crowded Adoration scene, flanked by three Magi in ornate crowns and jeweled robes; the muzzles of an ox and a donkey press in close, and a walled city rises beneath a night sky lit by a single star.
Elongated, mask-like faces and flattened, pattern-dense costumes recall icon painting and folk ornament, rendered in deep blues, terracotta, and gold against the dark ground. Firm outlines and jewel-toned color blocks give the scene a solemn, hieratic stillness rather than naturalistic space.
