About this work
A seated figure in a red robe holds a small red-toned bird or animal against its chest; where its head should be is a translucent sphere packed with staring eyes and half-formed faces. Weathered columns and arches rise on either side, a comet streaks across the night sky, and two pale spectral women crouch in the shadows to the left, beside a checkered red tabletop.
Warm ochre stonework and cool blue night sky frame a dominant field of blood red at the base, applied in dragged, scumbled strokes that leave the surface rough and worked-over. The uncanny eyeball head, painted with unsettling clarity against the loose surrounding brushwork, gives the scene a feverish, hallucinatory charge.
