About this work
A tall cathedral with twin domed bell towers and a lower wing lined with arched windows stands on a snow-covered street corner. Bare trees flank the building on both sides, their black branches silhouetted against the sky, while a lamppost and fence trace the foreground in dark outline.
Thick impasto strokes of oil mixed with chalky pastel build the walls in white and pale lavender, set against a turbulent dusk sky smeared with violet, rust-orange and slate blue. The rough, scratched texture and jarring color contrasts give the scene a brooding, dramatic charge rather than topographic calm.
