About this work
A single figure with a dark bobbed hairstyle sits with head bowed and shoulders curved inward, the body reduced to broad slabs of pale pigment beside a dark, checkered passage of drapery or clothing at the shoulder. The surrounding space is an undefined wash of rust-brown and olive, giving no clear setting beyond the isolated, self-enclosed pose.
Built up with a palette knife in thick, cracked ridges of white, ochre, olive-green and maroon, the paint itself becomes the subject, its rough surface catching light unevenly. Sombre reds and browns dominate the ground, while touches of yellow flicker through the impasto. The raw, unresolved handling and closed, downward posture convey an isolating, introspective heaviness.
