About this work
Five standing women in flowing classical robes occupy the upper band against a teal ground, their long hair or ribbons merging into golden, vein-like roots that cascade downward. Below, framed by a gold-leaf border with small roundel emblems, several nude men swing axes into the golden trunk from both sides, one crouched low with a saw, their bodies straining against the blue field.
Warm ochre skin tones and gold pigment contrast with saturated blue and teal grounds, applied in thick, worked impasto with visible tool marks. The icon-like framing and flat gold border lend a decorative, almost sacred structure to an otherwise violent act, producing a tense, dramatic mood of destruction beneath serene, elongated figures.
