About this work
A small, softly painted face rests between two raised hands, eyes closed, set into the center of a much larger black panel built up in thick, torn ridges of paint. Two curling, golden serpent-like shapes rise from behind her shoulders toward her head, and a thin silver line drips down through the black toward a small ring shape near the bottom edge.
The surrounding field is worked almost sculpturally, with deep grooves and cracked ridges of black material dwarfing the delicate, realistically rendered face at its center. Warm flesh tones and gold accents stand out against the matte black, creating a brooding, mysterious image that reads as much as relief as painting.
