About this work
An overflowing arrangement of lilac branches, ranging from pure white through pale lavender to deep violet, rests in a woven wicker basket. Green foliage and a few birch-like leaves push up between the clusters of blossom, and loose sprigs trail over the basket's rim onto the dark tabletop below, filling almost the entire canvas.
The flowers are built from short, loaded strokes of white, lilac, and mauve set against a warm, shadowy brown-red backdrop, creating strong contrast between the luminous blooms and the dark ground. Brushwork is broad and confident, with individual petals suggested rather than drawn, and touches of pure white catch the light across the top of the bouquet.
