About this work

A large bouquet of lilac fills nearly the whole canvas, its clustered purple, lavender and white blossoms set among dark green leaves that thin out toward the lower corners. No vase or table is shown; the flowers seem to hang loosely against a pale, undefined backdrop, with a few thin drips of paint running down from the blooms.

Petals are built up with a palette knife in thick ridges of white, violet and blue-grey, while the foliage is scumbled in deep green and near-black. Light falls from the upper left, catching the pale clusters and leaving the lower blooms in shadow, giving the still life a fresh, blossoming vibrancy.
