About this work
Despite the title, no lilac flowers appear in the composition. Instead the canvas shows a hazy waterside view, pale boat-like shapes and low structures on the left, an oval reflection and a curving embankment on the right, all dissolving into a body of still, reflective water that fills the lower half of the picture.
The palette is dominated by olive and khaki green, broken by strokes of cream, white, and touches of violet and rust along the far bank. Brushwork is loose and calligraphic, smearing forms into their reflections and leaving the scene deliberately indistinct, evoking a still, overcast day beside water rather than a garden.
