About this work
Two clustered bunches of lilac in shades of violet, lavender-pink and white spill outward from pale ceramic vases, their green leaves woven between the blossoms. The flowers crowd the entire canvas, leaving only a narrow band of muted background visible at the edges, so the composition reads as an all-over mass of bloom.
Thick ridges of oil paint, clearly built up with a palette knife, give every cluster a raised, sculptural texture, while colors are blended wet-into-wet rather than drawn with a line. Purples and magentas dominate, cooled by touches of white and warmed by scattered greens, and soft diffused light keeps edges blurred throughout. The handling is loose and energetic, giving the still life a lively, spontaneous feel.
