About this work
On a sunlit riverbank, four women in bright saris rinse laundry and metal vessels at the water's edge, one descending stone steps with a bundle of cloth. Downstream, three boys swim and splash in the ochre-brown current, while thatched roofs, tall grass, and coconut palms frame the far bank under a wide cloudy sky.
Warm ochre and gold earth tones contrast with the saturated pinks, oranges and turquoise of the women's clothing, all rendered in loose, confident strokes. Strong midday sun flattens the water into a mirror-like sheen and casts long shadows on the bank, giving the scene an easy, sun-drenched rhythm typical of daily village life.
