About this work

A solitary standing figure is rendered as a near-solid black silhouette with only two pale dots for eyes, wearing a long pale dress or shift with a buttoned collar. Two heavy diagonal bars, resembling crossed beams or a slung rifle, cut across the body from shoulder to hip.

Worked in scraped and scratched charcoal-grey tones on paper, the surface is scored with dense hatching and incised white lines like scars. Reducing the face to blank darkness and crossing it with raking diagonals creates a tense, watching, ominous presence.
