About this work
Tall, irregular townhouses with steep slate roofs, dormer windows, and chimney pots crowd together along a narrow street, their facades leaning at slightly skewed angles. At street level, a café with a red awning and a sign reading 'La Friterie' has small tables where several figures sit, while a cobbled pavement stretches across the foreground.
The buildings are rendered in muted violets, grays, and chalky whites, with thickly applied, textured paint that flattens the architecture into overlapping planes. Cool, dim tones and soft, diffused shadows give the street a quiet, melancholic mood, typical of an old European quarter caught in overcast light.
