About this work

A tall, deeply eroded mountain ridge with sharp rocky spires fills the upper half of the composition, its lower slopes covered in scrubby vegetation and outcrops. At its foot, partly hidden among cypress and other trees, stands a small building with a dome and slender tower, suggesting a settlement tucked beneath the cliffs.

Warm gold and pink light strikes the highest rock faces while the body of the mountain sinks into cool violet and blue-grey shadow, a contrast that gives the scene its dramatic, late-day mood. Paint is applied thinly and softly on the sky and rock mass, with small deliberate highlights picking out the sunlit ridgeline.
