About this work

An old lantern, its handle arched at top and body tapering into a boxy case, is shown in isolation against unbroken black. A round red lens catches the eye at the center, ringed by concentric highlights, while small vent holes line the base and metal clasps and hinges show along the sides. No other objects or setting are included.

The metal surface is built up in grayed blues and greens streaked with rust-colored ochre and touches of white highlight, giving a sense of pitted, weathered metal. Thick, textured paint describes the corrosion, while the smooth dark background throws the object into sculptural relief, and close framing with the warm glow of the lens gives the still life a quiet focus.
