About this work
A bearded man in a red cap sits playing a round-bodied bowed instrument braced against his knee, his bow arm raised mid-stroke. Sheets of paper or fabric are tucked around him on the ground. Behind him, only partly visible in the gloom, a taller robed figure stands motionless, their face turned toward the musician.
The scene emerges from near-total darkness, with warm orange and gold light picking out the musician's face, hands and instrument while everything else dissolves into brown and black. Paint is applied in loose, dragged strokes that leave the underlying dark ground visible in places. The strong chiaroscuro and glowing warm accents create an intimate, absorbed mood centered on the act of playing.
