About this work
A cluster of figures, seen mostly from behind, presses close together while one raises a phone to photograph something above; a boy in a white shirt peers straight ahead. Overhead, the dark silhouette of a killer whale glides across a deep blue background, accompanied by small glowing jellyfish-like forms and a spiraling green-and-yellow rosette in the upper corner.
The scene is built almost entirely in dark blue-black, against which the whale's pale underside and the jellyfish glows read as the brightest notes. Figures are painted with broad, flattened strokes that emphasize silhouette over detail, while the rosette and jellyfish are handled in a more graphic, simplified manner. The juxtaposition of ordinary onlookers with the huge floating creature gives the image a quietly surreal mood.
