About this work
Rows of bare-chested men in checkered and red sarongs sit in a tight circle, arms raised together in the kecak chant formation. Behind them loom a fanged demon mask and a wide-eyed guardian mask, while at right a woman in a gold headdress and fan dances beside a flute player. A cobra rests in a basket, a monkey crouches among the men, and a small golden Buddha sits in a shrine at left before temple silhouettes under a starry sky.
Warm ochres, terracotta, and gold pick out skin and masks against the deep indigo night, painted with rich, detailed brushwork on the carved ornament and costumes. The dense, symmetrical arrangement and firelit glow give the ceremony a charged, trance-like intensity.
