About this work
A marshy pond stretches across the lower half of the canvas, its dark water broken by pale patches of duckweed and reflected sky. Tall golden-green reeds and grasses crowd the near bank, while a dense wall of fir and birch trees rises along the far shore under a flat, overcast sky.
Muted greens, ochres and grays dominate a subdued palette, with only the water's pale reflections offering contrast to the shadowed treeline. The brushwork is loose and broken, built up in short strokes that convey the texture of grass and foliage rather than fine detail, giving the scene a quiet, damp, overcast stillness.
