About this work
The composition is filled almost entirely by a single bearded head, eyes half-closed and brow furrowed, set against a flat red ground. A pale, crescent-shaped halo curves behind the head at upper left, the only cool note in an otherwise hot, saturated field of color.
The face is built up in heavy, encrusted impasto, with ridges and pitted texture standing in relief from the surface, so the beard and hair read almost as carved relief rather than paint. Deep red, burnt orange and ochre dominate, giving the sculptural surface a smoldering, ascetic intensity.
