About this work
A wide frieze-like composition centers on a female rider in dark dress astride a white horse, sword raised overhead, flanked by knights in pale grey armor. Fleur-de-lis and cross-marked banners rise on tall poles at left while a second column of riders approaches from the right, water splashing beneath the horses' hooves under a churning sky.
Painted in a muted, near-monochrome wash of grey, blue and ochre with loose, scumbled strokes in the sky and horses, the composition builds tension through diagonal thrust and raised weapons. The subdued palette and broad, sketch-like handling give the charge a tense, dramatic urgency.
