About this work
Layered rooftops and two pale domes crown a hillside settlement seen from an elevated viewpoint, its walls catching the last warm light of a setting sun. Below, dark rocky slopes and scattered low structures fall away into shadow, while a strip of glowing gold cloud separates the town from a lavender-violet sky.
Loose, dry brushwork and scraped impasto build the buildings from broken strokes of white, ochre and rose, contrasted against smooth violet sky. The interplay of warm horizontal light and cool shadow creates a hazy, contemplative mood, as if the city were dissolving into evening haze.
