About this work
An arched gateway pierces the center of a weathered ochre and pink stucco building, topped by a clock and a small wrought-iron bell turret. Shuttered windows flank the arch, potted topiary and trees stand along the pavement, and a dark tree with fine branches rises at the left against a pale blue sky with soft clouds.
Warm ochre, rose and cream tones on the facade are set against cool blue sky and green foliage, applied in loose, confident strokes typical of plein-air painting. The strong midday light and empty street give the scene a calm, sun-warmed stillness.
