About this work
Large slabs of broken ice pile and foam across the wide river in the foreground, their white and grey masses catching what little light there is. Across the water, a low embankment carries a green warehouse building marked with a date, the golden dome and spire of a cathedral, and a slender red rostral column, all reduced to soft silhouettes.
A uniform, overcast grey fills the sky and blends into the water, leaving the scene almost monochrome apart from the warm ochre of the near shore and the faint red of the column. Thick, dragged strokes describe the churned ice, giving the whole view a cold, subdued, fading-light stillness.
