About this work
A solitary figure wearing a rounded cap sits hunched in deep shadow beside a table, head bowed as if reading or lost in thought. Behind, a narrow shelf holds a bottle, dried reeds and a small bowl, barely visible in the gloom. In the foreground, a thin trail of smoke curls from a small dish, the only movement in an otherwise still room.
The composition is built almost entirely from near-black browns, framed by a single warm patch of ochre light falling across the back wall. Paint is applied thinly, in the manner of old-master chiaroscuro, with form emerging only where light grazes an edge. The mood is heavy and brooding, evoking a sleepless night spent alone in near darkness.
