About this work
A young ballerina stands with her back turned, head in profile, wearing a black laced corset over a ruffled pink tutu with a white bodice trim. Behind her a mirror reflects a second, softer view of the same figure, while a straw hat hangs on a hook at the left and loosely draped fabrics in red, purple and cream fill the backstage space around her.
Rapid, broken brushstrokes model the bare shoulders and arms in warm flesh tones against cool violet shadow, while the pink skirt is built from thick, energetic strokes of rose and magenta. The sketch-like handling, visible canvas texture and unfinished background convey the immediacy of a dancer caught in a quiet backstage moment before a mirror.
