About this work
A ballerina sits bent forward, carefully tying the ribbons of her pointe shoe, her white tutu bunched around her and a dark blue leotard on her torso. Behind her, another dancer in a pale tutu and blue sash stands half-turned, her figure loosely sketched. A deep magenta drape fills the space to the right.
Brushwork throughout is loose and gestural, with broad strokes of grey-blue, white, and violet standing in for detail. Only the seated dancer's face and hands are given tighter definition, drawing the eye to her quiet, absorbed task. The overall effect is soft, immediate, and unpolished, like a fleeting backstage glimpse.
