About this work
Dozens of small objects are laid out in a careful grid-like arrangement on a flat gray surface crossed by a diagonal band of blue-and-white striped fabric: a large starfish, a crab claw, scallop and conch shells, sea stones, coral, a coiled length of rope, two glass bottles, a brass anchor pin, a compass-like barometer dial, and a red-and-white plumb weight.
Each object is rendered in smooth, fine detail with soft directional light that casts subtle shadows and picks out texture in shell ridges, rope fibers and glass reflections. The muted gray-blue palette set off by warm cream and tan tones gives the arrangement a calm, meticulous, contemplative mood.
