About this work

Behind him, a wooden house with a lit veranda glows through the foliage, and two small, indistinct figures - one near the house, one in a pale hat to the right - move through the trees.
Deep greens, blacks, and warm ochre house-lights build a dense, shadowed grove, against which the man's pale face and silver hair catch the strongest light. Broad, loose brushstrokes and visible impasto describe the foliage and clothing with rapid, gestural marks, giving the portrait an intimate, contemplative mood of a quiet moment outdoors.
