About this work
In the upper half of the sheet, an oversized profile head merges into a scene where a wheeled chariot and small robed figures seem to grow directly out of the skull, with a single star burning beside it. Below, three hooded, bearded travelers move in procession across bare ground, one of them holding up a small tablet or amulet toward the others.
Fine stippled dots build the speckled night sky, contrasting with the dense, velvety hatching of the giant head and the travelers' heavy robes. The layering of an interior vision within the profile, set above the earthbound figures, gives the print a hallucinatory, prophetic mood.
