Illustrations to the book of the prophet isaiah

Two enormous nude men, their wrists bound with rope, stride forward carrying a massive rough-hewn beam laid across their shoulders like a yoke. Between their legs, a much smaller naked figure stands on the bare ground, head tilted up, both hands raised toward the giant on the right as if pleading or protesting.

Heavy black shading isolates the two towering torsos against a near-black ground, their skin worked in coarse parallel hatching, while the small central figure is left paler and more delicately drawn. The disproportionate scale between the bound giants and the pleading figure gives the composition a tense, oppressive charge.
