About this work
In the lower left a man in a plain shirt sits hunched beside a stone alcove and a tangle of pipes and gauges, writing quietly in a small notebook. Above him, filling most of the sheet, a giant face - one eye, brow and jaw - is built from broken red-orange bands, as if glimpsed on a fractured screen.
Charcoal gives the writing figure and pipework a heavy, tactile solidity, while the overhead face is worked in scratchy orange-red pastel and swirling lines suggesting static. The contrast between the private act of writing and the oversized watching eye creates a tense, claustrophobic sense of surveillance.
