About this work
A man with an oversized head, wearing an ushanka fur hat and heavy coat, leans forward mid-stride along a snowy path lined by a wooden fence, arms drawn in against the cold. Behind him a village of huts with snow-covered blue roofs and smoking chimneys spreads across a gentle hillside under a pale moon and falling snow.
The scene is painted in cool blues and grays with warm brown accents on the coat and hat, the falling snow shown as soft round dabs across the surface. Brushwork stays smooth on the sky and rooftops but grows looser on the coat and fur, and the distorted proportions of the lone walker against the quiet village give the image a wistful tone.
