About this work
A woman in a red medieval gown and black wimple kneels at lower left, gently cradling the head of a white unicorn amid climbing pink roses. Behind them a stone Gothic arch divides the canvas into compartments filled with miniature stained-glass-like scenes: an aqueduct and hilltop village, mounted knights, a grazing deer, and a black bird against a red sky, all bordered by tufts of dry straw.
The composition is built on flat, jewel-toned reds, greens, blues, and golds, with textured, gilded surface effects worked in alongside the paint. Rendered in a deliberately flattened, manuscript-like manner recalling medieval tapestry and stained glass, the piece has a dense, ornamental surface and a hushed, storybook mystery.
