About this work

Two young women sit across a small table draped in green velvet, absorbed in a game of chess. The one at left wears a strapless brown satin gown and rests her chin on her hand studying the board; her opponent, in a red robe, reaches for a piece while stretching out a leg in striped stockings and white sneakers. A window at left opens onto a red-roofed townscape; the floor is black-and-white checkerboard tile.

The teal background and checkerboard floor echo the chessboard itself. Skin and satin are rendered with smooth, polished realism, while the red and brown gowns stand out against the cool wall. The anachronistic sneakers and striped stockings add a playful, contemporary note to an otherwise classical scene.
