About this work

Weathered stone fortress walls enclose a small domed chapel with a conical spire, perched on a rocky outcrop above green fields. Sunlit rays cut down through gaps in the clouds onto the ruins, while a distant mountain summit emerges faintly behind the roiling grey sky, and bright green terraces stretch across the foreground.

Bold masses of white, grey and charcoal cloud dominate the composition, painted in broad, sculptural strokes that convey the density of a clearing storm. Warm ochre and rust tones on the fortress stand out against the cool sky and vivid green fields, creating a dramatic contrast between the ancient structure and the vast sky above it.
