About this work
A man's head and shoulders fill the sheet, topped by a floppy black jester's cap with two points hung with small bells. He raises both hands to his mouth, playing a harmonica, his eyes narrowed and mustache curling above the instrument in a moment of concentrated play.
Worked in black charcoal with white chalk highlights on sage-toned paper, the drawing models the face and hands with dense, blended shading while leaving looser, sketchy pencil lines visible around the cap and shoulders. The contrast of soft modeling and unfinished contour gives the study an alert, playful character.
