About this work
A seated woman at left, wrapped from the waist in red cloth and wearing a beaded necklace, smiles and rests her hand on her companion's leg. Beside her a second woman, draped in white, raises both arms to fasten a dark head covering, beaded strands circling her wrists. In the lower corner a clay jug, green vase, lemon and orange form a small still life.
Saturated reds, oranges and deep browns are applied in broad, loose strokes, with the patterned backdrop flattening the sense of depth. Warm, diffuse light models the figures' skin in simplified planes, and the loaded brushwork gives the scene an intimate, vibrant energy.
