About this work

Dozens of pale, stiff fish bodies are bundled and stacked into a single standing column, their dark tails and fins splaying outward like ragged fringe. The bundle rests in a corner beside a wooden door frame fitted with an iron latch, its planks and hinges visible at the left edge, on a dark, stained floor.

A deep rust-red wall fills the background, its warm tone set against the bleached cream and grey of the fish flesh and the black shadows of the fins. Paint is built up thickly to suggest dried, leathery texture, lit by a raking light that gives the still life a heavy, somber weight.
