About this work
An invented layered garden fills the composition: stepped terraces and zigzagging staircases climb a hillside dotted with trees, framed by colonnades, arched loggias, and a blue-and-white striped dome. In the foreground, pink-tiled courtyards, a checkerboard pavement, and classical columns lead through open doorways toward pale buildings crowning the hill, with small figures visible on the terraces.
A sun-bleached palette of ochre stone, dusty rose, and pale blue is rendered with fine, even brushwork and delicate architectural line work closer to technical drawing than loose painting. Light is diffuse and nearly shadowless, flattening the many planes into an ornamental pattern. The effect is whimsical and dreamlike, an invented classical utopia.
