About this work
A canal recedes between rows of pale buildings toward a low stone bridge, beyond which a slender tower rises against the sky. Figures and cars move along the embankment on the right, and the water in the foreground fills most of the lower half of the composition, its surface broken into overlapping patches of reflected color.
The water becomes the real subject, painted in mosaic-like dabs of turquoise, gold, orange, and violet that fracture the reflections of buildings and sky. Brushwork throughout is loose and rapid, with buildings rendered as soft vertical strokes and the bridge as a dark, solid arch, giving the whole scene a lively, shimmering, almost playful energy centered on the interplay of light on water.
