About this work
A tight cluster of hooded, cloaked figures leans around a small table set with chess pieces, where a hunched, ape-like creature sits opposite an old bearded man in a heavy robe. More hooded onlookers crowd in from the right, and a single enormous feathered wing curves up behind the foremost robed figure at the left edge of the sheet.
The charcoal is worked in dense, layered strokes for drapery and fur, leaving bare paper for the strongest highlights on faces and hands. Tonal contrast is heavy, concentrating attention on the hunched creature and the board at center. The atmosphere is strange and charged, part solemn ritual, part uneasy game.
