About this work
A tarnished metal ewer with a curved spout and looping handle stands at right beside a plate heaped with apples, dark and green grape clusters, small purple plums, and a yellow lemon with a curling stem. A single ripe apple rests apart in front of the jug, and the corner of a red patterned carpet appears at lower right, against a plain warm-toned wall.
Warm ochres and browns unify the composition, with the jug's dull metallic sheen picked out in cool grey highlights against the fruit's saturated purples, greens, and yellow. Brushwork is smooth and detailed on the fruit, looser and scumbled in the background. Muted, even light gives the arrangement a subdued, homely richness.
